Government - An elected county council manages Berkeley County. A supervisor is appointed by Council to handle day-to-day operations of the county.
Berkeley County Water & Sanitation, Moncks Corner Public Works Commission and the City of Goose Creek provide water and sewer services to the county.
Electric power companies supplying Berkeley County residents and businesses include Santee Cooper, Berkeley Electric Cooperative, and South Carolina Electric and Gas . South Carolina Electric and Gas is a provider of natural gas.
BellSouth, Home Telephone Company, and St. Stephens Telephone Company provide telephone service to the region. Several independent long distance carriers are available as well.
Transportation in the region is available by air, train, or highways. Major interstates include I-26, I-95 and I-526. South Carolina Department of Highways and local counties maintain state and local roadways.
Aviation – Berkeley County Airport and Charleston International Airport serve the county residents.
Rail Service – Norfolk-Southern and CSX provide freight service to the region. Amtrak provides passenger service in nearby towns.
Port – The Port of Charleston is the fourth busiest port in the United States.
The Towns of Bonneau, Cross, Pinopolis, and St. Stephens are located in western Berkeley County. Bonneau and St. Stephens have an elected town council and mayor form of government. Moncks Corner is the county seat.
Government - Management of county affairs is vested in a seven-member county council. Each council member is elected for a four-year term. County council appoints the county administrator. The county administrator manages the staff and day-to-day operations of the county.
Transportation - Federal Interstate highways serving upper Dorchester County include I-95 and I-26. The South Carolina Department of Transportation and local governments manage the state and local road systems.
Water & Sewer are provided to the county by the Summerville Commissioners of Public Works, the Dorchester County Water & Sewer Commission and other municipal utilities.
